Fun Things To Do With Grandparents

Request a Tour
Young kids and their grandparents use their imagination to play together.

Time spent with grandparents is more than just a collection of moments—it’s an opportunity to connect across generations, create cherished memories, and learn from their rich life experiences. That’s why giving your kids quality time to bond with their grandparents over fun activities can foster stronger family ties and bring them all an invaluable sense of joy.

Whether you’re looking for indoor activities, outdoor adventures, cultural outings, technology-driven fun, or seasonal special activities, here are some fun things for your kids to do with their grandparents. Bring them by, have a family meal, and brighten everyone’s day!

Indoor Activities

Spending time indoors doesn’t have to be boring—there are endless ways to enjoy quality time with grandparents within the comfort of home.

Play Board Games or Solve Puzzles

Dust off a classic board game or pick up a challenging puzzle. Games like Scrabble, Monopoly, or card games such as Rummy can ignite friendly competition while offering laughter-filled moments. Puzzles, on the other hand, encourage teamwork and keep the mind sharp. These activities are perfect for strengthening cognitive skills and creating lighthearted family fun.

Craft Together

Unleash your creativity through shared crafting projects like knitting, painting, or even DIY decor. Crafting is a wonderful way to share skills and create keepsakes that will remind you of time spent together. A handmade scarf or a photo frame painted with a grandparent becomes a symbol of these special moments.

Try a Family Recipe Day

Invite your parents to share their favorite recipes with your kids. Maybe it’s a traditional family soup or a dessert recipe you’ve always wanted to try! Cooking together can be a way to preserve family traditions while learning new skills—and enjoying a delicious meal together. Everyone will walk away with full bellies and full hearts.

Outdoor Adventures

Stepping outside provides fresh air, sunshine, and opportunities to explore together. These simple outdoor activities promote not just physical health but also emotional well-being.

Go for a Nature Walk

Taking a peaceful stroll through a local park or along a scenic trail can be a great setting for bonding. Choose paths with gentle terrain and plenty of benches for resting. Enjoy meaningful conversations while soaking in the beauty of nature or spotting local wildlife.

Try Gardening

Gardening is both therapeutic and rewarding. Pot some plants, create a small herb garden, or spend time weeding and watering. This is a chance for your parents to share their gardening knowledge with your kids, and working in the soil together can bring a calming yet productive sense of connection to the earth.

Have a Picnic

Pack a picnic basket with favorite snacks and head to a park or lakeside spot. Sharing a meal outdoors surrounded by nature can create a relaxed moment of togetherness. It’s also an opportunity to disconnect from devices and focus on the joy of face-to-face connection.

Grandparents blow bubbles with their grandchildren during a picnic in a park.

Cultural & Educational Outings

Exploring the world through cultural and educational activities opens up opportunities for meaningful discussions and shared discoveries.

Visit Museums or Historical Sites

Whether it’s an art gallery, history museum, or local landmark, these outings can lead to fascinating conversations. Grandparents often bring unique perspectives to these experiences, making them even more enriching.

Attend a Community Event

Check out local fairs, theater productions, or live music events. Attending together allows grandparents and grandchildren to share new experiences while giving them a chance to feel involved in the vibrant community around them.

Technology-Driven Fun

Bridging the generational gap with technology can provide engaging and unexpected ways to connect.

Host a Virtual Museum Tour

For days spent at home, many museums and galleries offer virtual tours that can be explored together on a computer or tablet. It’s an easy way to bring cultural adventures right to your living room!

Play Online Games

Introducing your grandparents to simple, interactive online games is often a fun way to let their grandchildren become the experts. Whether it’s a digital version of a card game or an online trivia challenge, technology can open up new doors for fun.

Seasonal Specials

Celebrate the uniqueness of each season and create memories tied to special traditions and moments.

Pumpkin Picking or Apple Orchard Visits

Fall offers a chance to enjoy colorful leaves, explore a pumpkin patch, or visit an orchard for apple picking. These activities bring a sense of seasonal joy and a chance to capture fun photos together.

Build a Snowman or Decorate for the Holidays

Winter fun can include building a snowman or sipping hot cocoa after sledding. Alternatively, host a holiday decorating event, just like when you were a kid!

Spring Planting or Summer Water Fun

Spring is a great time for planting flowers, while summer calls for enjoying the sunshine together. Splashing around with water balloons or a simple backyard BBQ can make for a memorable summer afternoon..

Make Every Visit Count

Grandparents bring wisdom, warmth, and love into our lives, and spending time with them nurtures bonds that transcend generations.

✨ Who’s Who Wednesday! ✨

This week we’re shining the spotlight on Cindy, one of our amazing RMA’s! 💙

🏡 Cindy has been part of The Athenaeum family for almost 2 years.

🛒 Her very first job was bagging groceries at Winn Dixie in Florida.

🐶 When she’s not at work, you’ll find her hanging out with her dogs and boyfriend or doing a little online shopping.

🍝 Favorite foods? Italian cuisine and Red Bull! 😄

🌴 Fun fact: Cindy was born and raised in Florida and has only been living in New York for the past 8 years. Even more impressive, she has dedicated 28 years to healthcare!

❤️ Cindy has a huge heart and genuinely cares about both our residents and her coworkers.

Thank you, Cindy, for everything you do for our residents and team! 👏🎉

It is always a pleasure when Mrs Herr’s Third Grade class visits from State Street Elementary School.
For our final visit before school ends, we had a brief discussion about what makes the 4th of July more special this year over other years, the Semi Quincentennial.
Then, with the help of our residents, the children completed a questionnaire that they will hopefully save and look back on fifty years from now.
Our residents got to share with the children what the Bicentennial or 200 year Anniversary was like 50 years ago and how life was different then compared to now and we all shared what we thought might change in the next 50 years.

Happy Flag Day. 🇺🇸

In honor of Flag Day, we took some time this week to begin preparing ourselves for July, a month to celebrate our country’s 250th Anniversary. With the help from a friend at The American Legion, we respectfully retired our old flag, we raised a new flag, discussed the history of the American Flag, played some of our favorite patriotic music and had a history lesson with a timeline and order of events including The Revolution, The Constitution, The Declaration of Independence and The American Bill of Rights.
Thank you to all who were able to join us.
